Tracing Our Triggers: Finding the Wisdom Inside That Activates Us (September 2026-Making Meaning from Mess Series)

  • Process Work Institute 2049 Northwest Hoyt Street Portland, Oregon, 97209 United States (map)

Presented in partnership with the Process Work Institute. You can attend this workshop live online on September 23 or 24, or in person in Portland on September 22. Register at the Process Work Institute. Details below.

What if the things that trigger you have something important to teach you?

The reaction doesn't fit the moment.

A comment lingers for days.

A tone of voice gets under your skin.

Someone else's behavior affects you far more than it seems to affect everyone else.

You know you're hooked.

But you don't know why.

Most approaches treat triggers as something to manage, control, or overcome.

This workshop takes a different approach.

What if your trigger is carrying information?

What if the irritation, defensiveness, hurt, frustration, or strong emotional charge is pointing toward something important that wants your attention?

Together we'll explore how triggers show up in the body, how they shape our perceptions and reactions, and how awareness can help us move from automatic reaction toward greater choice, understanding, and perspective.

Because sometimes the thing that activates us most strongly is also the thing with the most to teach us.

This Workshop is For You if You've Ever…

  • Been surprised by the intensity of your reaction.

  • Wondered why certain people push your buttons.

  • Found yourself replaying conversations long after they ended.

  • Felt stuck in recurring emotional patterns.

  • Reacted in ways that didn't make sense to you afterward.

  • Wanted more choice when strong emotions arise.

What You'll Leave With

  • A new way of understanding your triggers—not simply as problems to manage, but as signals carrying information, perspective, and possibility.

If You've Ever Thought…

  • "Why does this affect me so much?"

  • "I know I'm overreacting, but I can't seem to stop."

  • "Why do I keep getting hooked by the same things?"

  • "There has to be something I'm not seeing."

  • "Maybe there's more going on here than I realize."

come play, explore and learn together!

No prior experience with Process Work or inner work is needed.

ABOUT Cathy Bernatt

Cathy Bernatt helps people face the power dynamics everyone feels but few dare to name.

A Master Certified Coach, Professional Facilitator, and Organizational Development consultant, Cathy works at the messy intersection of power, conflict, culture, and change. She has a gift for surfacing the undiscussables:  the tensions, silences, and hidden roles that quietly shape how people lead, relate, and make meaning together.

For more than four decades, she has worked globally with Fortune 100 companies, NGOs, hospitals, educational institutions, and executive teams across cultures, including two decades living and working in Japan. Her approach blends pragmatic skill-building with deep inner work, helping people understand how their relationship with power shapes their impact and the cultures they build.

Cathy believes power and conflict are not problems to solve. They are human territory to navigate, wherever people care, disagree, decide, avoid, lead, follow, stay silent, or speak.

Outside of work, Cathy is affectionately known as Bilbo Baggins, forever heading into unknown lands in search of awe, wonder, and the next wild horizon.

Cathy is a Processwork Diplomate and PWI alumni, having completed both a Master of Conflict Facilitation and Organizational Change, and a Master of Process Work.
